Where to spend your Joker

A points game, not money betting. Uncle Predictor involves no money, accepts no deposits and pays out no cash prizes. Nothing on this page is betting advice.

The Joker doubles the points from one match. It's the most consequential decision of every matchday — and, judging by the numbers, the one people think about least.

The evidence that it's being wasted

At the 2026 World Cup we recorded 4,305 predictions. If the Joker were being spent on the matches people know best, the hit rate on those matches would have to be above average. It isn't. It's exactly the same.

Bar chart: 59.1% got the outcome right, 9.6% got the exact score right, and 9.6% got the exact score right in the matches where they used their Joker

That's what you'd expect if the Joker were assigned at random — or, more likely, given to the most appealing match of the matchday rather than the most predictable one. This is no small detail: the Joker is the only lever that multiplies points, and it's being used with the same aim as any ordinary prediction.

The Joker doesn't cover for mistakes

Doubling zero still gives you zero. If you get the match wrong, the Joker gives you nothing back. It's not insurance — it's a prediction stacked on top of a prediction.

One rule follows immediately: the Joker is not for the "biggest" match of the matchday. The derby doesn't deserve the Joker just for being the derby — it's often the worst candidate, precisely because it's the most unpredictable. Emotionally charged matches are high-variance matches.

The other, mirror-image mistake is the overwhelming favourite. There the probability of being right is high, but everyone else will get the same thing right, and without rarity the Joker returns little more than double a small number.

What you're really maximising

Because it doubles everything, the Joker also doubles the rarity bonus. Its value varies a lot from match to match:

ScenarioWhat the Joker returns
You got the winner wrongNothing — zero doubled is still zero
You only got the outcome rightLittle — it doubles the smallest share
You got the exact score, a popular oneGood
You got the exact score, a rare oneThe maximum — it doubles points and rarity

Notice that the first two rows cover the overwhelming majority of cases: only 9.6% of predictions get the exact score right. Choosing your Joker match well is, in practice, choosing a match where your chances of being in that minority are above normal.

A three-step method

  1. Cut what you don't know. Eliminate the matches where you have no conviction about the winner. On a normal matchday that leaves three or four.
  2. Keep what you know in detail. Of those left, pick the one where you also have conviction about the number of goals — in particular whether the opponent scores or not.
  3. Break the tie with rarity. Between two similar candidates, keep the one where your score is least likely to show up on other people's slips.

Step 2 is the one almost everyone skips. Having an opinion about who wins is easy and not enough: 59.1% of predictions get the outcome right. Conviction about how many goals is what separates a good Joker from a wasted one.

Don't save it for later

A frequent mistake: saving the Joker for the last match of the matchday "to decide with more information" and ending up missing the deadline. The Joker doesn't carry over to the next matchday. A Joker on an average match is always worth more than a Joker left unused.
